There is a lot of speculation around this term. The main goal of such speculation is to divert the patient's attention from the fact that many surgeons divide follicular units into parts, which increases the profitability of such a procedure for the clinic by 2-3 times. Below we will figure out why dividing grafts is ABSOLUTELY IMPOSSIBLE and what this can lead to.
A graft in hair transplantation is a natural, organic follicular unit (a unit of follicles - hair roots). That is, by its nature, it is a WHOLE unit that was formed naturally. In essence, a graft is a hair production factory. The "capacity" of the factory can be different: a graft can contain 1-2, maybe 4, or even more hairs in the active phase (see photo). Some doctors "play" with terms and replace the concept of a graft with the concept of a follicle, as a result, the number of transplanted follicles always exceeds the number of grafts by 2-3 times.
The concept of a graft in hair transplantation emphasizes the integrity of this natural union, which should not be damaged during the procedure. Damage to grafts leads to the hair not taking root. Therefore, the correct concept of a graft in hair transplantation is a follicular union, i.e. a morphofunctional unit of the scalp, which contains: 1, 2, 3 or 4 follicles (or more) in the active stage (anagen) and 1-2 follicles in the resting stage (telogen), the follicles have a common microcirculation and innervation. Thus, a graft is a microorgan of the scalp.
That is, a damaged graft, like a damaged organ, has little chance of surviving transplantation.
Extraction of whole, high-quality grafts is a guarantee of hair growth after transplantation. Only a high-level professional who has the most modern technologies can extract grafts without damage, while preserving the reserves of the patient's donor zone. Professor A. Tsilosani has been performing hair transplant procedures for more than 22 years, he set a world record for the maximum density of transplanted grafts - 100 grafts per sq. cm (subject to their complete survival).
